THE BRIEF

A Damaged Wall That Needed a Fresh Start

When LASSA first approached Diegodalo, the brief was simple: restore a damaged wall and make the space look clean and presentable. The wall had previously been covered with a large adhesive decal, and removing it left behind damaged paint, adhesive residue and an uneven surface.

We removed the remaining adhesive, sanded and treated the wall, and repainted it as a clean canvas. But rather than stopping there, we saw an opportunity to turn the wall into something that could tell LASSA’s story.

THE DESIGN

Culture. Community. Integration.

LASSA didn’t have a finished mural concept. They wanted something that represented Latin America in all its colour and diversity, while also reflecting the organisation itself. We worked through the visual story together and landed on the three ideas that best represent LASSA: Culture, Community and Integration.

The central concept is connection. A stylised map of Latin America links to Australia, represented by LASSA’s own logo. The flowing lines stand for movement, migration and connection, and the small aeroplane reinforces the idea of people travelling between countries, cultures and communities. Thousands of kilometres apart, but connected every day by people, culture and stories.

THE PROCESS

Painted by Hand, Built in Layers

To make the mural stand out from the wall, key elements were created in MDF rather than painted directly onto the surface. The LASSA logo and the three key words were cut, painted in colour and installed as dimensional pieces, adding contrast, depth and a stronger link to LASSA’s existing identity.

1. Mapping the wall

The design was scaled and taped out on the restored wall, with the Latin America map as the anchor of the composition.

2. Laser-cutting the MDF

The LASSA logo and the words Culture, Community and Integration were laser-cut from MDF, with some of the finer details finished by hand.

3. Spray-painting the pieces

The logo, the hands and the letters were spray-painted in LASSA’s colours, then installed on the wall as dimensional elements.

Carolina, designer at Diegodalo, joined to hand-paint the finer details, like the face and features of the figure, bringing the whole composition together.

THE TRANSFORMATION

From Damaged Wall to Focal Point in Two Days

What started as a damaged wall became a colourful focal point for the organisation. In just two days, the space went from a plain, damaged surface to a mural that communicates LASSA’s identity and celebrates the connection between Latin America and Australia.

More importantly, the mural became part of the space where people come together to learn, connect, share their experiences and celebrate culture.

THE RESULT

A Wall That Tells LASSA’s Story

For LASSA, the mural was never just about decorating an office. It was about creating a space that reflects the people and values behind the organisation. The wall is no longer just part of the office: it has become part of LASSA’s story.
